Hello friends! We have some exciting news! Today's post marks the first of a new mini series to which we will show you our lake home tour, room by room and today we are tackling the living room! But first, a brief history lesson...
For the last 30 some years we had been going to the grandparents (Kim's parents) lake home compound (a former resort with multiple cabins on the property, perfect for the extended family) every summer. Some of our fondest memories were hanging out with the entire family on the lake, tubing, water skiing, grilling etc etc!. As time went by all the grandkids grew up and became too busy to keep coming to the cabin so as we know, all good things must come to an end and the grandparents sold this property. They down sized to a smaller cabin on the lake but it doesn't have room for the whole extended family.
This caused our family to think well, lets get our own place so that our kids/ grandkids will someday get to enjoy a place on the lake just like we did.
In 2013 we bought a lake home North of the Twin Cities. The home was already beautiful and move-in ready but we were set out to make a few cosmetic changes to fit our style. The home was very old world themed when we moved in- not very fitting for a lake home in our humble opinions. We were on a mission to brighten up the space and give it a lake cottage feel!
The very first thing we did was tweak the living room! The biggest eye sore of this space were the built-ins. They were a honey colored wood with black trim. There were glass shelves and glass doors that gave the built ins a very formal look. The shelving was used for the previous owners china but they had a TV in the mix...a slightly odd combo if you ask us!
We wanted a more casual look with open shelving so we hired a carpenter to build wood shelves, wood doors, and paint the built ins white! This is what it looked like after! We loved the results but the wall color was still throwing us off a bit...
While we lived with the yellow walls for a couple of years, we finally decided to freshen it up so we painted the walls white last summer (Natural Choice by Sherwin Williams) and boy did that make a difference!
Here is the final result!!
As you can see we kept all our furniture very neutral and used accessories to bring in some color. We went with an aqua blue color to bring into the room as we thought it was a fitting color for lake life and summer time (since we spend most of our time here in the summer's).
Blue glass, and wood textures bring balance to the space. Burlap and rope textures give a natural organic beachy feel that keep things casual and relaxed.

It's truly amazing what a little paint can do! It truly transformed the space and we couldn't be happier. We hope you enjoyed this mini before and after and tour of our living room. To stay up to date with future posts of our Lake home Tour please subscribe to our blog in the sidebar!
Until next time.
